hard drive
This term refers specifically to the physical hardware component of a computer. While often used interchangeably with "disk" or "drive" in casual conversation, it technically distinguishes the primary non-volatile storage from volatile memory like RAM.
In modern technical contexts, a distinction is frequently made between a traditional hard disk drive (HDD), which uses spinning platters, and a solid-state drive (SSD). Although SSDs lack the rotating disks mentioned in the primary definition, they are often colloquially referred to as the "hard drive" of a system because they serve the same functional role.
